Ideas for supporting your child at home

Autumn Term

This was a very busy and interesting term for the Foundation children.  The children learnt about themselves and this culminated in the children producing face collages and learning about the local area they live in through nature walks and discovering more about Great Britain .  The children were busily absorbed in many different activities from baking Gingerbread men to painting the St George’s cross.  During global citizenship week the children were involved in many different activities and one of these was to make crowns.

The children went on their first wellie walk to Popes Meadow with their year 5 buddies, this was very enjoyable for all the children.  The children were all absorbed in noticing the different areas that make up the meadow from the wooded area to the pond.

The finale to the term was the Foundation nativity play called ‘It’s a baby!’.  The children rehearsed on numerous occasions and this perseverance led to three wonderful performances to both the parents and the rest of the school.

Spring Term

First half term 2009

Our theme during the half  of the term was 'Check Out China'. Through this theme we found

out about the customs and traditions of a different culture. We listened to the legend of the Chinese New Year Race, used the Chinese Zodic calander to find out what animal sign we were born under and found out about how many families celebrate the New Year. We listened to some traditonal classical Chinese music,  read information books about China and made Chinese flags. Our role play area became a Chinese restaurant.  The children had  lots of opportunities to develop their creativity through dance, cookery, ICT, art and role play. We are even tried to try some  Tai Chi in our PE lessons! We really stretched our learning muscles and made good use of our white and red thinking hats.

Second half term 2009

This half-term’s topic will be ‘Getting to know Ghana ’. The children will try their hand at weaving, printing, music and cooking using fruits that grow in Ghana . We will also be learning how to play some traditional games that are played in many of the African countries. We are sure the children will enjoy this topic as much as they did last half term!

In the lead up to Easter we will also be finding out about the seasonal changes that occur in Spring. We will visit the school nature reserve to look for signs of spring and will go on a wellie walk to Popes Meadow with our Year 5 buddies.

Summer Term

Summer 2008

Our summer term theme is ‘The Natural World’. We have been learning about plants and what they need to grow. We read the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ then planted our own bean seeds. We kept a record of their growth in a bean diary. We have also been growing lettuce and radishes in our outside area. We visited the nature reserve to see what seasonal changes had occurred since our last visit in the spring.

We have also been finding out about minibeasts and life cycles. We looked after five caterpillars and watched them carefully as they grew, spun cocoons and eventually emerged as butterflies. We used stamps to print the life cycle of a butterfly and used our white thinking hats to help us record our ideas in circle maps. We had lots of fun when we went to Popes Meadow on a minibeast hunt with our Year 5 buddies.

In circle time we used our red thinking hats to help us consider how we felt about leaving Foundation and moving into Year One. We each shared our worries and talked about ways in which we could help ourselves and each other overcome these worries. Our red thinking hats helped us to think of something we are looking forward to. We also performed our first sharing assembly to the school and our parents this term.
