Autumn Term

Our topic this term was the Seaside . We wore our white hats to find facts about the seaside and Grace Darling and compared Binfield with the seaside. We wore our red hats to write stories and poems about the sea. We watched the film Lucky Dip which we followed up with lots of role-play about the different characters.

Our visits were to St. Mark’s Church and Maidenhead Synagogue, where we enjoyed finding out lots of information about special places and why people visit them.

We celebrated harvest by thinking about the Rights and Responsibilities of children around the world, bringing our gifts to share with others.

The whole year group really put their hearts into our very successful production of Manger Mouse. Our parents and friends loved it and were very proud of us.

Spring Term

Summer Term

Our Summer History topic is The Coronation of Elizabeth II with ICT, Literacy, DT and Art cross curricular links.

The children designed covers for their Coronation Books and searched the internet for information. They enjoyed writing poetry about the Golden State Coach procession, the atmosphere in the crowds that day and the role of Lady Rosemary. Lady Rosemary was one of the six Maids of Honour at the Coronation. She lives in Binfield and we were extremely fortunate to hear her account of that special day.

After visiting The Royal Mews and seeing The Gold State Coach for themselves the children designed and made their own personalised coach. We looked at portraits of the Queen and sketched our own portraits wearing our crowns and holding our orbs and sceptres.

The climax for Year 2 was their Assembly in which they were able to show and explain, using Power Tools, much of what they had learnt. They particularly enjoyed performing their own poetry in groups and jiving to the sound of the 1950s.

Our topic ended in the same way as many on the actual day with a 1950s street party to celebrate!
