Year 3
Here is a brief outline of what we hope to cover in the curriculum areas this term:
Maths: The children will be taught in their classes until half term. After this they will be split into two sets. As always, these sets are regularly reviewed and remain flexible throughout the year to ensure that children make the maximum progress in their learning. Please support your child in helping them to learn their multiplication tables as being confident in these has great benefits in the daily maths lesson.
Literacy: The main areas being covered this half term are poetry, fact and fiction and play scripts. Where possible the work is linked to other curriculum areas. Spellings will be set on a Friday and will be tested on the following Friday, although the children practise these on a daily basis in school it is important that they also learn them at home (a copy of the words will be stuck into home learning diaries). Once again the children will be taught in two sets later in the term.
Science: This term’s work is related to Magnets, Springs and Materials. During investigations we will be focusing on making informed predictions and planning fair tests. The children make catapults to investigate the stretch of elastic bands!

Topic: Our topic this term is Ancient Egypt. This will include an Egyptian day where the children will be able to dress in character (more details to follow nearer the time). Through this topic we will cover both historical and geographical aspects.

R.E: The focus for this term is Christianity and how beliefs make a difference to people’s lives.

I.C.T: The children will improve their word processing skills and will use art software to produce an Egyptian pattern.
Art/D.T: The children will design and make personal banners which will involve both art and D.T skills. There will be a charge of approximately £1.50 to cover the cost of materials if your child wishes to take their banner home. Following on from the banners we will be making and using Egyptian prints using stamps, stencils etc…
P.S.H.C.E: The children will be following the SEAL programme this term, which covers New Beginnings, Getting On and Saying NO to Bullying. You should have also received a letter about SALT sessions that all of Year 3 will be taking part in.
Music: Our music the term is called ‘Animal Magic’. The children will be developing their composing and performing skills by creating sequences in response to music and words.
P.E: This term the children will be developing their cross country and basketball skills. As the weather gets colder and wetter your child will need suitable warm and waterproof clothing. On a Wednesday or Thursday there will be a dance unit linked with the Ancient Egyptians followed by gymnastics.
In addition to reading for twenty minutes every evening and practising spellings, to begin with, more formal set tasks will only be given every Monday (maths), Wednesday (literacy) and Friday (other), for which they will have two evenings to spend on it. This will be recorded in their diaries, including the due date.
Regular reading at home is extremely important and will be rewarded in an effort to ensure this always takes place. The children will receive stickers and merits based on the number of times they have read at home each week (parent signatures in reading logs are counted to determine this). More detailed information about the system is enclosed in your child’s reading log.
If you would like to help with reading in school, this will take place every Tuesday to Friday 1:20-1:45ish! Or if you would like to help on a Friday afternoon with art/D.T please pop in and see us.
As you can see we have a busy but enjoyable term ahead of us and we thank you in advance for your support. If you have any questions please feel free to come in and see us!
Here’s what the children thought about the Autumn Term learning in Year 3:
In Art and DT we made banners. I really liked sewing the pictures onto mine. In P.E. we learnt to dance the Samba to link with our focus on the continent

In Autumn Term science we learnt about magnets and springs. We tested all the magnets to see which one was the strongest – it was the horse shoe magnet. We also had fun with elastic bands and made catapults! We tested those as well. The winners were Joe M, Hannah V, Jonny and Emma. The term was a lot of fun! (Holly & Joe M)

Here is an outline of our curriculum studies this term.
Literacy: The National Literacy Strategy will again be the main part of our English work this term. The children will be studying the features of narrative writing and will focus on fables, myths and legends. We will also enjoy poetry and instruction writing.
Maths: This will involve work on mental arithmetic skills, fractions, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, money, shape and space and handling data. There are many learning opportunities at home that add valuable support to your child’s learning. Teaching your child to tell the time, counting money and change, practising timetables, measuring and problem solving all help to consolidate and reinforce math skills taught at school.
ICT: We will be learning and creating our own databases, we will also use computers for cross curricular work in Geograhpy.
Geography: In our topic this term (after ½ term) we will be learning about the importance of rainforests in our world. This is an interesting unit with a trip to
Science: W e will be learning about human teeth, plants and rocks and soils. We have a visit from our local dental nurse to share advice and information about looking after our teeth. Part of this session will involve the children chewing a disclosing tablet which colours plaque on their teeth a bright blue. This highlights very clearly to the children how important brushing teeth is to remove (usually invisible) plaque.
DT : We will be designing and creating our own healthy sandwiches. This will include tasting and selecting ingredients.
PE: Once again the children will take part in gymnastics, dance and sporting games as part of our PE curriculum. Our PE times are Wednesday afternoons (outdoor) and Tuesday (3JB) or Thursday (3AJ) mornings (indoor). Please ensure your child has their PE kit on these days.
RE: This term we will be learning about the Sikh religion and we hope to visit the Maidenhead Gurdwara.
We try our best to ensure home learning is given each night in meeting our school homework policy. Reading and spelling is daily home learning with 20mins extra learning given from the other curriculum subjects on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please note this will begin to increase now that they are in their second term of Year 3.
