Year 5
Autumn Term
We recently went on a trip to the Imperial War Museum in London to learn more about what life
was like during World War 2.
Outside the museum.
Imagining what is must have been like spending time inside the very cramped Anderson Shelter!
This term we had lots of fun but we had some responsibilities to go with it. In year 5 we have a responsibility to look after a buddy in foundation. We have lots fun when we go on a walk to Pope’s Meadow with them. Another fun activity we do is called pals, where we go onto the infant playground and set up games and play the games with them.
We also made a cam toy for a younger child like our buddy. We had some parents come in to help us. We all had lots of different ideas.
We had a challenge to do a book review on a book of our choice, but we had suggestions from teachers. It was fun as well as a challenge. We also had to make a collage, comic strip of a favourite chapter or a 3D model of a character to go with it. We all had a look at each others’ reviews for recommendations on good books to read.
This term we have had a very interesting time learning about World War 2. We had a great time at the Imperial War Museum. We got into groups and then we explored the museum. The places we saw were the Blitz experience, a 1940’s house, the large exhibits including tanks submarines and more.
At the end of the term we made biscuits and a box to go with them to sell at the Christmas bazaar. Nearly all of us bought our own biscuits! We had a fun messy time and parents came in to help out.
In literacy this term we learnt about Anne Frank. We also watched some clips from two films about the diary. Now you can go and see the annex they hid in. One of the films was in black and white and the other was in colour. We discussed if we preferred the black and white or the colour one. We also looked at trailers for those films and some other films and discussed them.
As you may know some schools are using the resource power tools and a new one came out called learning muscles. These are some of them, making links, Planning, and Managing Distractions. We spot out what learning muscles we are using in class and what muscles we are going to use.
We have loved year 5 so far and we are looking forward to the rest of the year!

Spring Term
This term Yr5 have had lots of fun. We will describe to you some of the activities.
In PSHCE we have been discussing setting and achieving goals. We designed a poster about our hero’s. We had to answer questions on the brief. We also had a task of planning and teaching a friend one of our skills a few example are: sports, magic tricks, art and much more.
As you may know Year 5 have buddies and with them come lots of responsibilities. This term we went on two welly walks to Pope’s Meadow, we had to look for different signs of spring and draw them.
In topic we have been studying Ancient Greece. For home learning we were given a project to research. We could choose our own topic, some of them included fashion, famous buildings, transport, healthy living and childhood. Linked to art and DT we made some ancient Greek pots. We have also been designing, painting and evaluating our own mythological creature. We used lots of learning muscles such as; Planning, Revising, Absorption, Perseverance and many more. We have also made some Greek sandals which was linked to D.T. We went to the
In Science we have been studying the properties and changing states of Solids, Liquids and Gases and we have also learned about the water cycle.
The learning muscles we have used this term are; Collaborating, Absorption, Noticing, Imaging, Questioning, Imitation and many more.
On Wednesday 1st of April we are going on a school trip to
HAPPY EASTER!!!!!!!
By Calum Hargreaves and Anastasia Tkachuk
As part of our history topic about the Ancient Greeks, we have made Greek pots.
Below are some examples of our Ancient Greek projects that we completed as part of our home learning.
Summer Term
In Y5 we have lots of exciting things happen. We went on an exciting trip to
Another thing we have enjoyed through out the whole year is having a buddy; we’ve been on wellie walks and played lots of fun activities, including games in PALS and learning dances in Kickstart. We are also looking forward to having the Teddy Bear’s picnic. We have also read stories to our buddies and they have read stories to us, and we made them an interactive book in I.C.T.
In Science we have been learning about life cycles in plants, changes in our life, how babies are made and how babies are born. (Oo-er!)
In Music we have also been making protest songs in small groups. When we had finished our songs we all competed in a song contest called ‘Yourvision’ that we all enjoyed very much, because it is fun making up songs and playing with the keyboards.
Also in Art we have been doing a range of things such as making the grand designs (our art work) and our crowd scenes. We have enhanced our skills with drawing and including detail.
Classic text has been one of our main priorities in Literacy. Some of the classic text included: Little Women, Ballet Shoes, The Railway children, The Wizard of Oz, Black Beauty and many more. We had to choose a classic book, read it, review it chapter by chapter, and then re-design the front cover.
As you can see we have had lots of fun in Y5 but it doesn’t stop there. Two men came in and taught us how to build and set a Lego model to move in a certain direction. We had lots of fun doing this. It was frustrating but it stretched our noticing, listening, collaboration, planning muscles and most of the others.
As you know we have almost finished our time in Y5, but we still managed to squeeze one last thing in. PIZZAS! First we had to design them, then a few days later we made their shape, decorated them and with the help of Mrs.Thwaites we managed to cook and eat them.
We have all had a great time in Y5 with all the subjects and Sports Week. We can’t wait till Y6 but none of us want to leave, and we hope that the coming Y5 have just as much fun as we did.
